The Journey Continues–day 2

New blog from our Ministry leader, head on over and check it out!

Earnie Lewis

Coming out into the open about my past abuse has been a big step for me but not one without many awakenings.  I had always thought I’d find judgment from the world around me.  Instead, I’ve found a variety of responses:  support from ones who identity, support from ones who don’t identify but are sympathetic, support that’s simply–“good job”, and those who just remain silent but do so without judgment.

In my spiritual journey I’m finding my need to live in the new life Christ has given me.  Romans 6:6 says “For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with….”  The years of abuse started early in my life, 3-4 years of age and continued until my upper teen years leaving me with some deep rooted belief systems which Celebrate Recovery calls character defects.  The old self I’ve…

Accountability is key to freedom

This past week at our monthly leadership meeting we spent the second half of the evening dedicated to an Accountability Workshop. The devotional that was read before our meeting can be found at the following website:

If you are new to this site and are just dropping by to check out Deer Flat CR, come by on a Wednesday night and find out how accountability can be your key to freedom from your past hurts, hang-ups and habits.

Remaining steadfast

At our last leadership meeting a devotional was read about standing firm (Stand Firm devotional). This piece spoke about how God can use us to change the course of history when we remain steadfast and obedient. Especially during those times of hardship.

A quote from the meeting minutes of that night includes a look at the heart of this ministry and the reason why we are as leadership so committed to following His lead.

Although heavy-hearted at the loss of leadership, we have to remain firm in His work. We are here offering more than a hand out, we are offering the tools to help others find freedom. The hand up that we offer requires relationships; relationship building requires effort. CR isn’t the work that we do but the ministry that we share in service to others. It is important during the good times and the bad that we remain steadfast and available; to remain committed for the example that we set for others. This is God’s ministry that we have accepted and even when the program is low in numbers, the people that we are serving are in need of Him…when bad things happen, we should be grateful for how God will use those struggles to take us up to a new area of life. A step that we may not have taken short of that event happening,”

As this new chapter of life unfolds, remember that hardship isn’t punishment, but a pathway to peace.

Never without hardship.

I love how this picture represents the journey that we all face when we begin that first step out of denial. It looks like a long desolate road ahead but the truth of recovery is found in the serenity prayer. When we learn to accept hardship as a pathway to peace, we begin to surrender to hurts of the past and allow the hope of the future to take it’s place.

The hardest struggle is getting out of the rut and onto the road. Go ahead and step, Freedom is Here!
